HABITS CREATE REALITY
BREAKING DOWN THE VISION.
It’s our habits and our routine that shape the outcomes of our lives. A great way to understand our trajectory is to assess:
If I was to continue with the same habits and routine that I currently have -- where would I be in ten years? Closer or further away from my goals?
What habits and routine would I require to inevitably arrive at my goals?
Write these reflections out and see if you can build a few into your week. In Atomic Habits by James Cleae -- he talks about habit stacking, which means finding one habit you do with ease (brushing teeth or making the bed) and attaching a new habit straight afterwards or beforehand. Because it's preceding or following a habit that’s already easy, it makes the new habit easier to slot into our routine. Don’t go for too many at once and overwhelm yourself -- just build in one or two every couple of weeks. (Try for 4 new habits by the end of the month).
For example: The habits and routines that a client wanted to introduce were: drinking more water, moving their body every day, reading each night and meditating daily. That felt like a lot to begin with -- but we added meditation in with their morning coffee (something they already did daily) and reading before bed first. We waited a couple of weeks and then added a morning walk in straight after meditation. Once she felt in flow with the new habits she bought a drink bottle to carry around to remind herself to drink more water.
We’ve been told that things happen overnight and our expectations have adjusted accordingly. But imposing restrictive timelines on results from new habits is a sure way to frustrate and burn ourselves out. Remember: the aim of the game is the long win not the short win. We aren’t trying to sprint and burn out all of our energy, but instead create a routine that's manageable on a daily basis.
We have an idea of our most magnetic selves and what it feels like to embody that space -- now our focus is on bringing that self into the present moment through restructuring our habits and routine. In order to do that, it’s helpful to have extra clarity on our values to ensure we are setting up a trajectory that feels fulfilling and enjoyable in the process of becoming. This is the sweet nectar of the workshop -- creating a daily routine that feels good NOW on the way to a place we’d like to evolve to. Think of it like a car ride to the beach that's so beautiful, you’ve forgotten you were even on your way somewhere. No better there than here.
