Intentional Financial Planning Prompts

The first step to taking control of our finances is taking inventory and setting up a system that leaves us feeling supported and positive about our financial future. I wanted to share my own tools with you in the hopes that this exercise gives you the confidence to feel good about your own personal financial journey.

Material wealth + the spiritual journey are not conflicting pursuits. When we take control of our finances, we gift ourselves a sense of security that allows us to show up more magnetically and authentically in our lives.

(Please note these prompts are from my own personal toolkit and in no way serve as professional financial advice — just a roadmap to help get you started)

PROMPT 1: IDENTIFYING YOUR CURRENT FEELINGS

Take a moment to sit in stillness and breathe deeply. As you focus on your breath, bring to mind your current financial situation.

What thoughts or emotions arise when you think about your finances? Write them down without judgment. How does your financial situation make you feel, and why?

PROMPT 2: SETTING FINANCIAL INTENTIONS

What does financial security mean to you?
How would you like your financial life to feel?

Write down your intentions for your finances based on how you want to feel—whether that’s security, freedom, abundance, or ease.

PROMPT 3: SETTING PRACTICAL GOALS

With your intentions in mind, write down three financial goals for the next 3 to 12 months. Make them SMART goals: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.

For example:

  • Save $1,000 for an emergency fund by the end of 6 months.

  • Pay off $500 of credit card debt in the next 3 months.

  • Invest 10% of my monthly income into a retirement fund for the next year.

What steps can you take to make these goals realistic? Break each goal into smaller milestones.

PROMPT 4: REVIEW SPENDING HABITS

Take 15-20 minutes to review your income and monthly expenses. Create a simple budget using the 50/30/20 rule: 50% for needs (rent, bills, groceries), 30% for wants (entertainment, dining), and 20% for savings and debt repayment.

Where can you make adjustments?

  • What are three areas where you can cut back spending (e.g., dining out, subscriptions)?

  • How can you redirect that money toward your financial goals (savings, debt)?

Write down one or two changes you will make to stick to this budget.

PROMPT 5: CREATING AN ACTION PLAN

Ground yourself with a few deep breaths. Write down three concrete steps you will take in the next month to move closer to your goals. Keep them simple and actionable. For example:

  • Set up an automatic transfer of $100 into a savings account each month.

  • Cancel one subscription and redirect the money to pay off debt.

  • Track all expenses daily or weekly using a budgeting app.

Check in with your budget and goals at the end of each month to see how you're progressing. Adjust as necessary to stay on track.
